Week Four Challenge

Español日本語

Very quickly: we’re putting this up a bit early and a bit rushed, so apologies to those who completed the Week Three Challenge for not getting you up here before we posted this Challenge. We’ll get those up asap. Thank you for your cool work!

This week, the Challenge is to make a re-imagine an existing wrestler’s mask! Pick an existing wrestler: past, present, active, retired, modern, old school, whatever you like—but a real wrestler! Now create a new mask for them. It could be a complete overhaul, or it could include elements from their old mask, but it should be an original creation from your creative mind. Think about the wrestler’s name, their character, and dream up a new look for them. So for the Week Four Mask Challenge, you should make a re-imagined version of an actual wrestler’s mask.

This week’s Challenge was inspired by a contest the wrestling promotion CHIKARA held in 2014, where they presented a list of four of their wrestlers and invited artists to come up with new designs for their masks and other gear. You can see the original post for the contest here and see all the cool ideas (and the winners!) here. (The name of that contest was so cool: The Re-CAW. If you ever play wrestling games, you get it!) I hope that this can inspire some maskmakers out there. (Also please note that that contest ended many years ago; don’t try and enter it! Ha!)

As always with MaskMaking March, you have one week to make your mask. We encourage everybody to post their masks to Twitter by Sunday, March 29 with the hashtag #MaskMakingMarch. We’ll repost everybody’s masks here on the website. (If we don’t see your mask and repost it, please send us a link!) Normally, this would be the final week of MaskMaking March. This is the second time we’ve done this, and it normally just lasts a month. If there is interest, please contact us at @maskmaking on Twitter, and we’ll think about trying to make some more fun for you all.

Images used in the Week Four Stripe above are of the original Shard, along with original art from folks who entered the contest in 2014. The art is by (left to right) Original photo of Shard, Matt Muzzy, Todd Loessy, Eric Schuster, Matt Muzzy, Paul Cesar Medina Valdez. (If you are an artist for the above art and are reading this now, please contact me on Twitter at @maskmaking if you’d like more information on why your art is here or if you’d like it removed. I couldn’t find your attribution on the original post mentioned above, but have done my best to track you down and ask. I’m not a company; I’m just a guy trying to help people through a hard time by doing a NaNoWriMo thing for wrestling mask makers.)
